Timemore Impulse Impact Tamper 58.4mm, Black
-
The Timemore Impulse Impact Tamper removes the biggest variable in espresso prep: how hard you press. Instead of relying on your own pressure, it uses a spring-driven impact mechanism. Push down, and internal springs deliver a firm, consistent tamp, then reset with a satisfying snap before your hand has left the handle. Whether it's your first shot of the morning or the fiftieth on a busy bar, every puck gets the same compression. Timemore rates the mechanism for at least 60,000 tamps, so it's built for daily, heavy use.
A broad 69mm self-levelling collar keeps the 58.4mm stainless steel base flat and centred in the basket, so you won't end up with a sloped puck that lets water channel down one side. The fit between base and collar is tight, with a gap of less than 0.05mm, so there's no wobble as you tamp. When you lift away, a chamfered lip around the base breaks the suction, leaving the coffee bed undisturbed.
This is the black version, with a black anodised aluminium grip over precision-milled stainless steel that looks right at home next to darker machines and grinders. The soft contours and rounded top sit naturally in the hand, and at around 640g it feels solid and planted on the bar. A fitted silicone base protects the tamper when it's set down, and its scalloped design catches stray fines. Prefer a lighter look? It's also available in white.

How does an impact tamper work?
Rather than relying on how hard you press, an impact tamper uses internal springs to deliver the tamp. You press down on the handle, and once you've compressed the springs far enough they release a consistent impact into the coffee bed, then reset ready for the next shot. The result is the same tamping force every time, whoever's using it.
Can I adjust the tamping force?
No. The Impulse uses a single calibrated spring setup, so the force is fixed. That's deliberate: the point of the tamper is to remove variation, so every shot is compressed the same way. If you want to control depth rather than force, take a look at the Timemore x Anthony Douglas FLOW Tamper.
Will it fit my portafilter?
The 58.4mm base is designed for 58mm portafilters, the standard size on commercial machines and many home machines such as the Lelit Victoria and Sage Dual Boiler. It won't fit 54mm portafilters, which are found on machines like the Sage Barista Pro.
Does it work with VST and other precision baskets?
Yes. The 58.4mm base is sized to fill precision baskets like our VST Precision Filter Baskets right to the edge, so coffee around the wall is compressed as firmly as the centre.
What does the self-levelling collar do?
The wide 69mm collar keeps the base flat and centred as you tamp, so you get a level coffee bed every time. An uneven tamp leaves one side of the puck thinner than the other, which lets water channel through the weak spot and extract unevenly.
Is there a difference between the black and white versions?
Only the colour. Both have the same 58.4mm flat base, spring mechanism, collar and silicone base, so they perform identically. If white suits your setup better, the white Impulse Impact Tamper is also available.
How should I clean it?
Brush or wipe away coffee after each session, paying attention to the gap between the base and the collar, where a little coffee can collect. Use a dry or lightly damp cloth and avoid the dishwasher, which can damage anodised aluminium and the spring mechanism.
Should I choose the Impulse or a standard tamper?
If consistency is your priority, especially with several people using one machine, the Impulse removes tamping pressure as a variable. If you prefer the feel and control of a traditional tamper, the Barista Hustle Tamper is a lightweight, precise alternative at the same 58.4mm size.
