Arara Coffee Beans

Arara is a Brazilian hybrid developed by the Procafé Foundation at its experimental farm in Varginha, Minas Gerais. It originated from a natural cross between Yellow Catuai and Obatã, a disease-resistant variety with Timor Hybrid lineage. Discovered unexpectedly in a breeding plot and released commercially in 2012 after more than 15 years of evaluation, Arara stood out immediately for its yellow cherries, high productivity, and strong resistance to coffee leaf rust — three qualities that matter enormously to Brazilian producers farming at scale.

In the cup, Arara offers sweet, chocolatey character with muted but defined acidity, good body, and a clean finish. The slow maturation of its yellow cherries is thought to contribute to flavour development. Competition results have been strong: lots have scored into the low 90s at Brazilian specialty auctions. It remains concentrated in Brazil and is still in relatively early adoption, but it now accounts for the majority of seedling orders at Procafé, which suggests it will become considerably more visible in specialty lots over the next decade.

Read more: Our Arara varietal guide · All varietal guides
